Chasting waterfalls in Papua New Guinea

Thursday 3rd September 2020

Thundering through the rainforest and shrouded in mist, the rainfalls of Papua New Guinea are renowned for their might, their height, and their awe-inspiring majesty.

In fact, Papua New Guinea’s waterfalls are considered so integral to the national identity that many are immortalised on the nation’s postage stamps in a bid to further highlight their incredible natural beauty to the outside world.

Here’s where you will find seven of the best cascades when chasing waterfalls in Papua New Guinea.

Wasi Falls – The Southern Highlands

Considered one of the most spectacular waterfalls in PNG, the Wasi (or Beaver) Falls are located near Lake Kutubu.

This group of falls comprises a series of cascades, the most impressive of which is the Bisi Falls, which drops over 100m to a limestone basin below and is approximately 90m wide.

Mageni cave – East New Britain

Deep in the jungle of East New Britain is the Mageni cave – a stunning and vast cavern which is home to an 80m waterfall that guards its entrance.

The site is further framed by other waterfalls all cascading into a large pool beneath, offering a unique and picturesque insight into the incredible, remote beauty of PNG.

Yuo Waterfall – Enga Province

Enga Province is officially PNG’s highest region with an altitude of 2000m. This remote and near untouched parcel of countryside is also home to countless waterfalls and cascades, including the renowned Yuo Waterfall, which is located just north of the province’s capital, Wabag.

Yuo sees the Lai River channelled through a narrow crack in bedrock that results in a fall which crashes into a pool metres below. So powerful is the force of this natural wonder that the waterfall spray can be felt up to 20 metres away.

Mt Bosavi Crater – The Southern Highlands

Papua New Guinea’s countless volcanoes and craters are a natural site for stunning waterfalls, and one of the most acclaimed is the extinct volcano known as Mt Bosavi.

Located in the Southern Highlands, Mt Bosavi’s cone collapsed many years ago. Now, the heavily forested walls are dotted with towering waterfalls that cascade from the rim to the crater floor beneath.

Wawoi Falls –Western Province
Powerful, wide and tall, the spectacular Wawoi Falls is set against a beautiful jungle backdrop in the Middle Fly region of Western Province.

Some argue this is the largest waterfall in PNG, but regardless of whether it officially takes out the title the Wawoi Falls is a wonder to behold.

Rouna Falls – Central Province

Located within easy reach of Port Moresby, the Rouna Falls may not be the largest in Papua New Guinea, but they are among the most visited.

The falls are located within 50km of the capital near the popular Varirata National Park.

This awe-inspiring waterfall sees water thunder from a rock face into the Laloki River gorge beneath, with multiple vantage points available.
